MySpace bans breastfeeding image

February 25, 2007

Thanks to HappyMum on Maya’s Mom for bringing this to my attention.

Myspace.com has removed a picture of a nursing baby (see below) from a Tacoma, Washington woman’s page because it “violates MySpace policies against nudity and sexually suggestive images.” Myspace also threatened to delete her page if she continues to post the picture. (!!!)

Here’s the photo:

Here’s the story: http://breastfeeding.blog.motherwear.com/2007/02/myspace_removes.html or http://www.kirotv.com/news/11083731/detail.html

Here’s the online petition to sign in response: http://www.petitiononline.com/Brstfeed/petition.html

I think the people at MySpace could find better things to do with their time, like remove actual pornographic pictures maybe. Oy.

    WHaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat!
I see more boob displayed on the street in todays fashion than in that photo.
Yeah – remove actual porn, not pictures of little people eating!

I echo Penny’s sentiments above. My Space certainly has heavier issues to deal with like pedophiles lurking around and cyber ganstas. It’s a beautiful picture and you can’t even see the boob, really. Baby’s arm and face is covering 98%!

Sexually explicit? No. But “technically” yes, that is a breast and a naked breast does constitute nudity…if you want to draw the line REALLLLLLY dark, which seems stupid to me given all the other stuff on MySpace. It does seem to me they’re looking for a scapegoat. How very strange.

I agree, anyone who is offended by a nursing baby needs to have their ticket punched and get off the societal bus and leave the rest of us alone.

THATS HUST PLANE OUT STUPID NURSING IS THE MOST COMING THING FOR MOTHER TO DO AND IF THEY GET MAD ABOUT THAT THERE ARE WORST PICTURES ON MY SPACE LIKE GIRL SHOWING BODY PART THEY SHODDENT. NOW IF THEY TAKE A MOTHER FEEDING HIS CHILED THEN THEY SHOULD PAY MORE ATTENTION OR GROWN AND TEEN WHT THEY ARE POSTING ON THERE OWN PROFILE PICS. THEY NEED TO GET A LIFE AND LEAVE DOES WITH GOOD MORALS ALONE.

This is absolutely absurd! Breastfeeding is BEAUTIFUL, and it needs to be NORMALIZED! We need to make mothers comfortable to breastfeed so more babies will get this important boost to the beginning of their lives!!!! Breastfeeding is not porn and is not offensive! I don’t have a myspace account, and believe me, after this I definitely never will. I find it disgusting that all sorts of pictures that verge on porn are allowed and then an image of a nursing mom–which should be viewed with respect and reverence and gratitude–is banned!!
