[...] MAY As I set out driving Friday night to hear Ina May Gaskin - called “the mother of authentic midwifery” by Midwifery Today - speak, I was filled with nervous excitement. When I was about 10 minutes out from the church in Lafayette where the event was taking place, a friend of mine called me to say she was saving some seats for me and other friends of ours and she was able to get pretty close to the front. I felt like a teenager going to a rock concert. — From An Evening with Ina May [...]

I wish I could have been there! The energy in the room must have been amazing. Wow! I'm definitely going to hear her when I go to Chicago - she's speaking, and so are some of the Sears.

Thanks for writing up your thoughts, Amy. I know how long it takes to type anything of length, let alone write coherently, with little ones about :)

Thanks for sharing that! I'll have to do some reading, since I haven't ever heard of her. Sounds like she would be right up my alley, having had a vaginal breech delivery (in a hospital, no less.) :)

Amy,
Thanks so much for your description of the event. I had tickets and was also very excited to go, but my cervical sphincter decided to open up that morning and release my baby into the world. So, due to timing, my midwife forbade me from attending. Thanks for the peek into the talk and surrounding excitement.

That's really cool. I read her book when I was pregnant - I really wanted to have that kind of birth, but it was a first pregnancy at 42 and I felt that I needed to stick to an OB. And I ended up with a totally medicalized birth with a grotesque c-section. Oh well. In my next life. Thanks for your "review" of the talk.

Great review,Amy! I think you covered most everything, and I also liked how she people ask her a lot how to have a hospital birth more like a home birth (I guess people who have to have a hospital birth, for various reasons) and she said "Just don't be too obedient." I liked that! :-)

I also really liked how she said a few times, she was a moderate on a lot of the "controversial" (circumcision, weaning, vaccinations) issues- she seemed to be very balanced and realized there are good reasons for people to be pro or con on these. I think it is a good example for myself, in realizing there isn’t really a “right” decision regarding these topics, and no one is “right” or “wrong” when deciding what is best for their children.

I also liked how said regarding the current atmosphere in hospitals with doctors and the main stream,” that most people go along with the herd, (regarding doing whatever the Dr. says, etc.), but what if the herd has it wrong?” That was met with laughter and applause. She really is a remarkable woman!
