    National Mile High Breastfeeding Celebration

    June 26, 2007

On Sunday morning, Jody, Ava, Julian and I braved the record-breaking 100 degree heat to attend the National Mile High Breastfeeding Celebration in Denver hoping to help break a record of a different kind.

Lactating mamas with babes, kids, hubbies and others in tow gathered together with the goal of breaking the national record for most women breastfeeding in public, as well as celebrating and promoting breastfeeding. The heat seemed to put a bit of a damper on the attendance, and we fell very short of breaking the national record, but a new record was set for the state of Colorado with around 200 women participating!

News cameras were poised at the ready, but the only station that appeared to run anything (and it was a very short clip at that) about the event on the evening news was Denver’s CBS station Channel 4. Channel 4 also ran a longer segment about it on the morning of the event (view the video) and interviewed Jennifer Weddig* of the Colorado Breastfeeding Task Force. And NBC’s Channel 9 published a story about it - Local moms try to beat national breastfeeding record - on their website. It’s a shame it didn’t get more coverage, but there was a lot of negative stuff in the news that day, and, as the oh so morbid saying in the business goes, “if it bleeds, it leads.”

Despite the heat, everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, especially all of the kiddos feasting on delicious mama milk. :)

Here are a few pics from the day…

Amy and Julian, ready to nurse Julian and Mama, breaking the CO breastfeeding record Some of the participants in the National Mile High Breastfeeding Celebration I’m #60

*An aside, I believe I ran into Jennifer Weddig at the event. She commented on how she and some others really liked Ava’s “Li’l Lactivist” shirt and asked me where I got it, so I got to plug my store. :) Too bad I didn’t have any business cards with me. Jody’s “My kid’s no weaner” shirt from The Lactivist store also got some compliments.

My posts have been few and far between this last week, but things are starting to slow down around here once again. I hope to post a recap of our very busy, but good week and get back to semi-regular blogging again soon.

    Stumble it!
